London Marathon raises record £59.4m in 2016

The London Marathon raised a record £59.4m this year, organisers have revealed.

The total is a world record for an annual single day charity fundraising event, and up more than £5m from 2015. This is the tenth successive year the marathon has broken the record, and takes the total raised over the history of the event to £830m.

The 2016 event also saw a record number of finishers at 39,140, and this year saw the millionth person finish the marathon.

Virgin Money Giving is the not-for-profit fundraising partner of the London Marathon. Donations to charity through the online service reached a record £26m, including Gift Aid, linked to the 2016 race.

The NSPCC, the Charity of the Year for 2016, raised more than £2m through its team of runners.

Hugh Brasher, event director of the London Marathon, said the event has been an extraordinary force for good since 1981.

“We are constantly working to grow the event and its positive impacts as society, health services and charities face increasing pressure on their services and funding," Brasher said. "The London Marathon Charitable Trust has enabled thousands more to get active through its funding of a huge range of recreational projects.”
