Commission warns on Myanmar appeals

At the same time as DEC announces its overnight success in fundraising, the Charity Commission has urged the public to donate safely to charities delivering humanitarian aid to help the people who have fled Myanmar. The safer giving advice was issued by the Commission follows the launch of the emergency appeal by DEC on Wednesday.

The Commission has stressed that although most fundraising is genuine, it has warned of fake appeal websites, email appeals that falsely use the name of genuine charities, or appeals from fake charities.

Although the onus is on the public to check the legitimacy of fundraising, charities themselves should help the public with clear identification for fundraisers and the ability for the public to easily check that they are a real concern.
