The Charity Commission has opened a statutory inquiry into aid charity Help Mankind amid concerns over “potential misuse of charitable funds”.
The regulator has been involved with the Manchester based charity since August last year to assess allegations around its financial management.
Following visits to the charity “serious regulatory concerns came to light that charitable funds may have been misapplied”.
Being looked at in the inquiry are whether trustees have fulfilled their legal duties and to ensure charity funds are being spent solely on its charitable purposes, around poverty relief, education and overseas aid.
During the inquiry the Commission has restricted the charity from transferring funds or assets outside of the UK or to any trustees and other people they are connected with.
According to the charity register Help Mankind spent £29,318 in the 12 months ending August 2024 but over this period its income was just £800.
