Probes launch into charities linked to ice rink chain

The Charity Commission has opened statutory inquires into two sports charities that are linked to an ice rink chain

The move follows the opening of regulatory compliance cases into Staffordshire Winter Sports Club and Bison in the Community, which is also based in Staffordshire, last October.

Both charities share trustees the Commission found and are linked to the Planet Ice chain of ice rinks.

The inquiry into the two charities will look at concerns around ice rink pricing, ability of the public to access their services and their financial management.

Their bank transactions will also be looked and whether there has been any unauthorised private benefit to its trustees and connected parties.

According to the charities register Staffordshire Winter Sports Club’s income for the financial year ending December 2024 was £12.5m, while it spent £11.9m.

Bison in the Community’s income was £11.7m over the same period and it spent £11.6m.
