Charities among most generous employers for workplace perks, say researchers

The charity sector is the third most generous industry in the UK for offering workplace perks to staff.

The finding has emerged in research by Reward Gateway | Edenred that looked at more than 8,700 job adverts across 37 industries.

It found that perks offered per 100 jobs sampled for those in the charity sector was 157. Only legal and accountancy jobs, with 163 perks per 100 jobs, are more generous.

But the research also found that the average salary of charity jobs advertised of £42,720 “sits around middle of the table, showing that a strong benefits package does not always follow the biggest pay packet”.

The most prevalent perk across all industries, is hybrid working, following flexible working and remote working arrangements.

“According to the latest figures, 28% of British adults were hybrid workers in 2025, a proportion that has risen steadily since the spring of 2022,” say researchers.

“Hybrid, flexible and remote working, along with working from home, together have 3,258 mentions. That's more than the other six perks in the top 10 combined (2,812).

“Notably, these come at little or no direct cost to employers, which may explain why they are so widely offered. Research also shows how positively flexibility is received, with 80% of employees reporting positive effects on their quality of life.”

Employee assistance programmes, mentoring, cycle to work schemes, private medical, wellbeing support and gym membership are among other perks listed.

The industries and job roles offering the least amount of perks include graduate and intern posts, manufacturing, engineering, banking and media, digital and creative roles.
