Revealed: The top charity CEOs on social media 2020

The top charity leaders on social media have been announced, with Dr Wanda Wyporksa, executive director of the Equality Trust, stealing the top spot.

Winners were announced on Thursday 12 November at the first ever virtual Social CEO Awards, hosted by Fundraising Everywhere.

The awards, which are now in their 8th ear and were founded by digital experts Zoe Amar and Matt Collins, celebrated leaders who are “using social media in bold and creative ways”.

Amongst the winners were Kate Lee of Alzheimer’s Society, Dalton Leong of The Children’s Trust and Saba Shafi of Bossing It.

The judging panel also chose an overall winner from the top CEOs, Dr Wanda Wyporska, executive director of The Equality Trust.

Additionally, the panel made six individual awards alongside the top CEOs to recognise ‘exemplary social media and digital leadership’.

Winners of these categories included:

• Minnie Rahman of the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants (Best Rising Star)
• Huda Jawad of End Violence Against Women (Best Trustee)
• Wayne Murray, charity strategy consultant (Best Leader) with Martha Awojobi (diversity and fundraising consultant) taking Highly Commended.

The digital categories were won by:

• Kiran Kaur of Girl Dreamer (Best Digital CEO)
• Claire Warner, fundraising consultant (Best Digital Leader)
• Ellie Talebian of MYTIME Young Carers (Best Digital Champion).

The nominees were judged by a panel of digital leaders chaired by Simon Blake, CEO of Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) England. The other judges were: Polly Neate, CEO of Shelter (last year’s winner), Tessy Ojo, CEO of The Diana Award, Lucy Caldicott, Founder at Change Out, Ruth Ibegbuna, Founder of RECLAIM Project and The Roots Programme and Kim Shutler, CEO at The Cellar Trust.

“In a tough year our winners have demonstrated that vision, ambition and being willing to stand out and take risks can help leaders succeed on digital, despite the challenges of COVID-19,” Zoe Amar said.

“Our judges were pleased by how winners had used digital creatively to champion the needs of the people their organisations support, to innovate in a time of crisis and to embrace challenging conversations about diversity. The class of 2020 show how leaders need to be bold and have a clear sense of purpose with digital as the social sector plots a route out of the crisis.”

Matt Collins added: “Many congratulations to this year’s winners. We’re pleased to see a range of social sector leaders amongst them, including some rising stars. As more organisations have majored on digital it’s become increasingly hard to carve out a niche but all of our winners show that any leader can use digital effectively if they invest in growing their confidence and skills. Leaders who do this will help their organisations create a sustainable future and stay connected to the people they support.”
