Louise Dawtry: Transforming nonprofit culture

Louise Dawtry argues that purpose alone can’t protect nonprofit professionals from burnout—and offers a roadmap for change.

Did you know that up to 75% of nonprofit people have experienced burnout? It’s a sobering figure that underscores the urgent need for change in our sector. Nonprofit work is often described as “a calling,” and for many of us, it is. There’s a deep sense of purpose but purpose alone doesn’t protect us from the emotional toll this work can take. In fact, it can sometimes make us more vulnerable.

Drawing on my experience in people strategy and wellbeing, I’ve seen how the right support can transform not just individuals and teams, but entire organisations. And this led me to found What’s the Chari-tea? – THE community, and podcast, for all nonprofit people to provide a supportive and inclusive space to share experience, as well as understanding and connection. One of the aims of ‘What’s the Chari-tea?’ is to help improve the wellbeing of nonprofit people and inspire more people to join the sector. I am passionate about disrupting the sector to help transform it into one in which people can thrive, not just survive.

In Episode 2 of the ‘What’s the Chari-tea?’ podcast, I sat down with Heather and Rob Huggins of Gosforth Civic Theatre to talk about the emotional highs and lows of running a charity. Their honesty echoed many stories from others in the community, and it also resonated with my ongoing work helping organisations reimagine their approach to wellbeing and sustainable impact. By providing community support and educating charity leaders on how to develop robust people strategies, the employee and volunteer experience can be vastly strengthened. Building a culture of emotional sustainability can feel challenging, but my conversations with guests often serve as a powerful reminder: wellbeing isn’t a luxury in our sector, it’s an absolute necessity.

Behind every nonprofit organisation is a team of passionate and dedicated individuals, often juggling multiple roles, wearing many hats, and carrying the emotional weight of the mission. But despite the challenges and vulnerability shown by those I’ve spoken to, there is also so much joy. The pride nonprofit people feel in their work, and the moments of connection with their communities, drive their tireless efforts. One common thread throughout every conversation is the incredible kindness, passion, and care of the people within this sector. I have never worked anywhere with more wonderful people than in the nonprofit world.

I’ve had the privilege of hearing so many inspiring and affirming stories like Heather and Rob’s, and our ‘What’s the Chari-tea?’ community is growing because nonprofit professionals are hungry for this kind of space. Together we’re building a movement that prioritises wellbeing, fosters connection, and champions emotional sustainability.
