A charity set up in the memory of the late MP John MacDougall, who died from Mesothelioma 18 years ago, has closed with its remaining funds transferred to a similar charity.
The John MacDougall Mesothelioma Trust was set up following the former Labour MP for Central Fife's death from the condition, which is an incurable asbestos-related cancer.
But his daughter Julie MacDougall, who is an MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife, has announced that following “a difficult decision” “we have decided to close the Trust” and transfer its £17,000 in funds to the “amazing voluntary group” Breathe Easy Fife.
She said: “I know wholeheartedly” that the charity “will utilise these to the fullest to help others”.
McDougall, who defected from Labour to Reform in 2025, said that her “work continues” around lung and respiratory health and she will continue to work with Breath Easy Fife on these issues.
“We will hold an annual event in memory of my late father continuing to raise the awareness of this awful disease Mesothelioma,” she added.
John MacDougall is also a former leader of Fife Council and was 60 years old when he passed away.
