New chief executive appointed at British Lung Foundation

Dr Penny Woods has been appointed as the new chief executive of the British Lung Foundation, the UK charity working for the millions affected by lung and respiratory disease nationwide.

She will take up the appointment from 1 September 2012, following the retirement of Dame Helena Shovelton after ten years in the role.

Woods joins the British Lung Foundation following three successful years as Chief Executive of the Picker Institute Europe.

Prior to this she spent seven years in a variety of senior roles at BTG, and many years as a management consultant within the healthcare sector, working for a range of clients including governments in the UK and overseas, multi-national companies, NHS organisations and private providers of healthcare. Woods is a qualified doctor.

In 2011, the British Lung Foundation had an income of £7,161,841 and spending of £7,188,909.

British Lung Foundation Chairman, Peter Dolphin said: “I am delighted that Penny is joining the British Lung Foundation. Her wealth of experience in patient-centred care is a great match for the BLF’s approach to helping people affected by lung disease, whilst her medical background and business, management and cross-sector healthcare expertise will prove a real asset to the organisation."

Dr Penny Woods added: “The British Lung Foundation is a wonderful, hugely important charity which, led so ably by Dame Helena, has worked so effectively on behalf of people affected by all respiratory diseases.

“With a number of vital projects and campaigns either in planning or already underway, I am delighted and proud to be joining the organisation at this exciting time in its history."
