Association of Charitable Foundations announces new chief executive

The Association of Charitable Foundations has promoted Carol Mack to chief executive.

Mack has spent the past 12 years as deputy chief executive. Prior to joining ACF, she worked advising charities on governance and charity law, and on national policy formulation at the Charity Commission.

She also has experience in grass-roots charities and the commercial sector where she began her career in the international trading and refining division of an oil company. Mack is chair of the Wales Funders Forum, vice chair of Tree Aid, and a former member of the audit committee at Victim Support.

Mack said she is “proud and thrilled” to be taking up the chief executive’s role.

“Effective foundations are essential to the health and diversity of civil society and I look forward to working on their behalf to maintain and enhance a policy and operating environment that supports their vital work.”

ACF chair Amanda Jordan OBE said the decision to appoint Carol was unanimous, and followed a rigorous process.

“The breadth of her experience, combined with her unrivalled commitment to, and knowledge of ACF and its membership left us in no doubt she was the right person for the job,” Jordan said. “I am delighted she accepted our offer and I speak for the entire board when I say how much we are looking forward to working with her in the coming years.”

Mack will take up the role next month following a short handover period from current chief executive David Emerson CBE.

Emerson said Mack’s tireless and inspirational work over the past decade speaks for itself.

"Her knowledge of the sector, immense drive, and exceptional skill-set make her an excellent appointment,” he said. “As the organisation enters a new strategic period Carol will offer the continuity, clear-sighted leadership and fresh vision that is needed to ensure ACF continues to go from strength-to-strength.”
