Former Charity Commission boss takes on new role

Former chief executive of the Charity Commission, Andrew Hind, has been appointed Visiting Professor of Charity Governance and Finance at Cass Business School, which is part of City University London.

Hind, who left the commission in 2010 after six years in charge, has joined Cass’s Centre for Charity Effectiveness which provides leadership and management expertise to the community and voluntary sector.

Hind will play a key part in the Centre’s teaching and research activities, contributing in particular to the post-graduate Diploma in Charity Accounting and Finance.

Commenting on his appointment, Hind said: “I am honoured to receive a Visiting Professorship at Cass and look forward to drawing on my knowledge of contemporary charity issues to help shape the Centre’s leading work.”

Professor of Voluntary Sector Management at Cass, Paul Palmer, added: “Andrew brings an ideal combination of qualities to our research centre. With his extensive leadership experience in the not-for-profit sector, and unique understanding of charity regulation gained at the highest level, he will make a valuable contribution to our teaching and research.”

Hind stepped down from his post at the Charity Commission in September last year.

During his tenure, he was widely admired for steering through major charity law reforms and raising standards of transparency and accountability in the charity sector.

Prior to this, he was chief operating officer of the BBC World Service (1995-2004), Director of Finance at Barnardo’s (1992-95), and Deputy Chief Executive of ActionAid (1986-91).

He is a chartered accountant, was co-founder of the Charity Finance Directors’ Group in 1988, and is author of a leading book on charity governance, The Governance and Management of Charities.

His appointment comes alongside that of Professor Stephen Lee who joins Cass from the Henley School of Management where he built a strong reputation as director of Voluntary Sector.

He will take up the position as a course leader for the post-graduate diploma in Charity Marketing and Fundraising.

The Centre for Charity Effectiveness provides a mix of post-graduate programmes, research, talent development and consultancy services to maximise the effectiveness of organisations and individuals within the voluntary and community sector.
