ACEVO chief executive Stephen Bubb has revealed that he wants the sector to work on helping the new government deliver a "Big Society" but warned there needs to be much realism, given government cuts are likely to impede on the sector.
He said: "And so a new chapter begins for the sector. This result offers a great opportunity to work with the coalition Government to deliver stronger communities and a bigger role for the sector in delivering citizen focused services."
And referring to the March ACEVO Conservative Party Third Sector Summit he noted: "We made the Tories a " Big offer" at our sector - Conservative Summit and we have now written to he Chancellor asking how the big offer of cost effective service delivery we made can help him cut the national debt.
"And we want to talk to the new Prime Minister about how we can work in partnership to deliver stronger communities and a Big Society.
"But our partnership offer must be realistic. If cuts are made that damage our capacity to deliver, or weaken third sector bodies then we will oppose them and work hard to reverse them. We must continue to speak without fear or favour for citizens and for the excluded and marginalised.
"The sector's lead bodies will need to be ever vigilant in defending our members as well as promoting partnership. A stronger parliament and a Coalition strengthens our hand. But in the difficult times that face our country the sector must play its part in finding solutions."
