UK’s charity shop hotspots revealed

Charity shops in Nottingham have emerged as the most popular in the country, according to latest research.

The analysis looked at the total number of charity shops in areas as well as their average ratings on Google.

Nottingham, which has around 100 charity shops in its city centre, topped the rankings. A key factor was the range of boutique second-hand clothes charity clothes shops, particularly in the ‘bohemian’ Hockley areas of the city.

North London has emerged as the second most popular charity shopping destination, with Bournemouth in third.

Also in the top 20 are Bristol, Oxford, Liverpool, Leicester, Newcastle Upon Tyne and Blackpool.

2. North London
3. Bournemouth
4. Derby
5. Edinburgh

The research has been carried out by student accommodation website mystudenthalls.com.

“Charity shopping has always been popular for those looking to save money, be more sustainable and find something unique; it’s no surprise that charity shops have become even more popular with younger people and students who are cash-strapped and looking for an ethical way to enjoy fashion and homeware trends,” said mystudenthalls.com managing director and founder Dan Roberts.

“With charity shops surging in popularity again as the high street reopens after lockdown, and students return to term time, many will be looking to find the best destinations for a second-hand haul- but it’s not always easy to know where to start. Our ranking has done the hard work for thrifters.”

In August it emerged that charities had recorded a boom in online sales during the first half of the year as high street stores reopened following Covid-19 lockdown.

During this period there was an 151% increase in the number of items sold by charities via online platform Shopiago.
