STRATEGY UNIT PROGRESS AVAILABLE FROM COMMISSION 11/02/04

The Charity Commission has launched a new section on its website to explain the progress it is making on the recommendations from the Strategy Unit report.

Although the "Private Action, Public Benefit" report has been overtaken by plans for a new Charities Bill, there are still areas for change which are not dependent on new legislation, and the Commission wishes to highlight their work in these are.

This includes:
- working with the sector to develop a Standard Information Return (SIR) for charities with annual income above £1m
- reviewing charities' accounting requirements (SORP) to make charity accounts more meaningful
- opening a new Charity Commission office in Wales in April
- relaunching the Commission's website with better focus on stakeholder's needs
- opening up the Commission's board meetings to the public

The Commission states: "There is much interest, from charities, their trustees, donors and those who benefit from charities is seeing how 'Private Action, Public Benefit' is implemented. These website updates will enable people to see at a glance how the Commission is taking forward the recemmendations it is responsible for implementing."

The updates can be found at www.charitycommission.gov.uk under "Strategies, Plans and Reports"' then "Reforming the Framework".
