NEW AWARDS SCHEME REPORTS HUGE NUMBERS OF NOMINATIONS 05/08/03

Beacon, the charitable initiative that aims to raise the profile of philanthropy in the UK, has reported a hugely successful call for nominations for the inaugural prize scheme.

The Beacon Prize has received over 750 nominations, with many of the UK's leading charities represented as well as a host of smaller groups and new charitable enterprises.

"These nominations really reflect the diversity of giving in the UK and show us to be a true nation of philanthropists," commented chief executive officer, Emily Stonor.

"We've been overwhelmed by the response and we would like to thank all of those who have made nominations. To us, everyone who has been nominated is a winner in their own right."

David Charters, chair of trustees stated: "We've received nominations for all sorts of people about all sorts of projects. Between them, our nominees have raised millions of pounds and been involved in a wide range of charitable projects such as famine, conservation, counselling and animal welfare, to name but a few. Our youngest nominee is 11 and our oldest is 103."

Nominations for 2003 are now closed, and the final judging will take place on September 30.
