MUSEUMS FUNDRAISING NOT SPONTANEOUS ENOUGH, SAYS AUDIT OFFICE 10/02/04

Museums and galleries need to encourage a more "entrepreneurial culture" in order to maximise their fundraising potential, according to the National Audit Office (NAO).

In its report to parliament on the sector, the NAO states that, although self-generated income is expected to increase in the future, there is a need for the government to work closely with organisations to ensure success.

It says: "Although museums and galleries are involved in a number of creative schemes, they may need to do more to encourage an entrepreneurial culture."

Fundraising is already the major source of income for such groups, bringing in £68m in 2002-03, compared to just £22m from trading - but much of this was tied to specific campaigns and projects.

The report calls on museums and galleries to have access to better financial information, so it is easier to "identify and grasp opportunities, measure profitability, and manage risk".

NAO head Sir John Bourn comments: "By developing appropriate skills and culture, they will be better placed to improve on existing efforts and maximise the potential of new activities, such as online services and products."
