MAJOR UK FUNDING SCHEME LAUNCHED BY JAPANESE GRANT GIVER 17/01/03

The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation, the leading UK charity supporting links between Britain and Japan, today announces major new grant-giving initiatives.

Since its establishment in 1988, the Foundation has awarded £7m in grants to a wide range of educational, cultural and scientific projects in the UK and Japan.

From January 2003, the Foundation will seek to build on past achievements by strengthening existing programmes, and introducing new frameworks for encouraging innovation and collaboration.

The Foundation's grant-giving will be focused in three separate programmes. All share the same objective: to promote links between the UK and Japan through projects of mutual interest and benefit. The programmes are:

Daiwa Foundation Awards: These awards of £10,000 to £25,000 are available to institutionally-based applicants. They support collaboration between UK and Japan partners with tangible long-term outcomes. They are divided into three categories: Arts & Culture, Education & Society, and Science & Technology. Each year there will be at least one theme for each category. The deadline for applications during 2003-04 is 31 May 2003.

Daiwa Foundation Small Grants: These grants of £1,000 to £5,000 are available to individuals and institutions in the UK and Japan. They cover travel bursaries, conferences and symposia, individual academic research and educational exchanges. The deadlines for applications during 2003-04 are 31 March and 30 September 2003.

Daiwa Adrian Prizes: Every three years, the Foundation makes available approximately £50,000 to fund awards in recognition of significant scientific collaboration between Japanese and British research teams.

The deadline for applications during 2003-04 is February 28, 2004. Announcing the programmes, Professor Marie Conte-Helm, director general of the Foundation, said: "The restructured grants programmes are designed to expand the Foundation's activities into new sectors. We are very excited by the potential areas of collaboration and look forward to developing enhanced relationships with our recipients."
