TAKE ANOTHER BLOW AS NUMBERS BEGIN TO FALL |
04/02/03 |
| |
The
number of wills containing charitable bequests has dropped by more than
500,000 in the last three years - and is still falling.
Research by Charity Monitor shows that there are now fewer than 2m charitable
wills, compared with a peak of 2.5m in February 2000, and is likely to continue
going down.
These figures follow on from a study at the end of 2002, which claimed that
only one in ten wills now contain a legacy to charity - the lowest proportion
ever recorded.
Charity Monitor manager Andrew Papworth says: "The decline in charitable
will-making by professional and senior managerial people, who are likely
to leave the largest estates, has a disproportionately damaging effect on
legacy incomes."
