HOME OFFICE TO IMPROVE SUPPORT STRUCTURES IN CHARITIES 27/02/04

Voluntary groups and the communities they underpin are to benefit from a cash boost of nearly £1m, Home Secretary David Blunkett has announced.

Twenty-two national projects to support frontline organisations – ranging from grassroots community groups to large organisations delivering services in marginalised communities across the country – will get investment from the Home Office's Capacity Building and Infrastructure National Exemplar Fund.

The funding is the first step in a wider £80m programme to create and sustain the right support structures for the voluntary and community sector – such as use of information technology, developing human resources and ensuring communities have a voice in policymaking.

At the launch, Blunkett said: "Voluntary and community organisations are central to the government's drive for civil renewal: building strong, active communities in which people have the ability to shape their future.

"But voluntary organisations need support in order to do their job. That is why we are investing in capacity building and infrastructure – the glue that holds the sector together and ensures its sustainability."
