END OF AN ERA AS MILLENNIUM COMMISSION ENDS ITS MAJOR FUNDING 15/07/03

The Millennium Commission has announced its final round of major lottery grants, totalling over £32m, which aim to build on the success of existing projects.

The money will benefit around 150 projects in the UK, ranging from a new education centre for the Eden Project (£10m), enhanced children’s play centres in Glasgow (£145,000) to a new Millennium Square for Sheffield (£1.5m).

Annoucing the final list, Tessa Jowell, chair of the Commission and Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport said: “Not enough people realise the extent of the contribution the lottery has made to the lives people lead right across the UK – perhaps that is one of the reasons why ticket sales have declined.

"Hopefully, these final major Millennium Commission grants which build on the success of existing projects, will help get the message across because they can typify the benefits which the lottery is building.

"The government recognises the way in which such projects have transformed the communities in which they are based. That is why the government’s document on the future of the lottery envisages that the Commission’s work in supporting large projects will be taken forward by the new distributor, formed by the merger of the New Opportunities Fund and the Community Fund.”

The Millennium Commission announced its first grants in 1995 and has since provided more than £1.3bn to 200 projects across the UK, which provide access to education, science, the arts and our environment.
