CHIEF EXECUTIVES VOTE FOR STATUS QUO ON BOARDS 25/03/04

Trustees should remain unpaid, according to research released today by NCVO, which brands calls for governance reform a "distraction".

The research undermines those – such as ACEVO – campaigning for an overhaul of governance arrangements to allow trustees to be paid; it shows overwhelming support among charities for the status quo. The survey also shows 60% opposed to chief executives sitting on trustee boards – despite the fact that the majority of the 322 respondents were chief executives.

"The fundamental principle by which boards operate – voluntarism, has again been endorsed emphatically by the sector," said NCVO's head of trustees and governance Tesse Akpeki launching the report at the group's annual Trustee Conference today.

"The constant debate around trustee payments and chief executives on boards only serves to draw the focus away from the issues that really matter. Rather than questioning current governance structures we must focus our energies on providing further practical support and advice around recruitment and training for a new generation of trustees."

The findings contradict a study by ACEVO at the end of last year that found "high levels of dissatisfaction" with current governance arrangements among chief executives and trustees.
