Nominations
are being invited from the public and voluntary sectors for the Public Reporting
and Accountability Awards 2004, which recognise best practice.
Hosted by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA)
and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), the awards are looking for examples of
best practice in public reporting and accountability arrangements.
Entries are encouraged from organisations from any sector whose principal
activities are the provision of public services, and are split into four
categories:
- Local organisations with an annual turnover of less than £50m
- Local organisations with an annual turnover of £50m or more
- National organisations with an annual turnover of less than £50m
- National organisations with an annual turnover of £50m or more
All entries will be judged on five criteria: appropriateness for relevant
audiences; clarity; timeliness; innovation; and success in achieving response
from the public and other stakeholders.
CIPFA chief executive Steve Freer says: “Strong public accountability is
a vital ingredient of good corporate governance. Modern accountability involves
the provision of clear, timely information about what the organisation has
been doing and plans to do. Crucially, it requires real engagement with
the organisation’s stakeholders.
"If organisations fail to engage the interest of the public and other
stakeholder groups then they fail to achieve full accountability. If they
are involved in a one-way process that provides information that stakeholders
ignore or find indigestible, then real accountability is not yet in place.
"I know that this is very challenging territory and hope to receive
entries from a wide range of organisations which are developing their own
individual approaches."
A shortlist of finalists will be available in April and the awards ceremony
will take place on June 15 at the Hilton Brighton Metropole hotel. Closing
date for entries is February 28.
