| Plans
to establish a European network of third sector leaders have
been bolstered by the public support of the European Commissioner
for Trade Peter Mandelson.
At a meeting in Brussels attended by third sector representatives
from across the continent, Mandelson said the network was
an interesting, creative and “rather important”
venture.
“The Commission needs a network of third sector leaders,
and they themselves need networks to share knowledge,”
he said. “The European Commission doesn’t have
a monopoly of wisdom. We need to work closely with civil
society. We need to consider improved ways of spending the
EU budget. Your network can help shape our thinking, and
find improved ways delivery.”
John Low, chair of Acevo, said Mandelson had offered unconditional
encouragement and support to the group of leaders. A second
meeting of third sector representatives is to take place
in six months, and will aim to increase participation from
leaders across the breadth of Europe.
Ulrich Cronenberg, representative of the Red Cross EU Office
and the German Red Cross, said the meeting had been an opportunity
to get information directly from the Commission.
