Sector rewarded at UK Charity Awards 23/09/05

Richard Curtis, Iain and Betsy Duncan Smith and Paul Goggins, the charities minister, were among the 600 individuals who attended last night’s [22nd September] UK Charity Awards, hosted by Charity Times magazine.

Taking place at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, the awards celebrated the achievements of 14 individuals and organisations for their work in all areas of charity management, from finance and fundraising through to best practice and use of technology.

In the opening speech, Paul Goggins described the sector as crucial to the work of the government. “These awards recognise excellence across a whole range of charitable activities and the variety of people involved,” he said. “It is good to be able to celebrate new organisations together with the long-standing. The government recognises the vital importance of charitable activities, organisations and individuals carrying out the work. I strongly applaud each and every one of you for your tireless commitment and hard work.”

This year the lifetime achievement award was presented to Richard Curtis. Although perhaps better known as the comedy script writer responsible for films such as Four Weddings and a Funeral, Bridget Jones’s diary and Notting Hill, as founder of Comic Relief and a major player in the MakePovertyHistory campaign he has worked tirelessly to improve the lives of millions of disadvantaged people around the world.

The accolade of Charity of the Year was received by P3, and was awarded on the evidence of a strong strategic plan; a recently modernised governance structure; and evidence of considerable success in the areas of equality and partnership work.

Deputy chief executive of Acevo, Gail Scott-Spicer, described the evening as “wonderful”. “I was delighted to be able to congratulate several acevo members on receiving awards,” she said. “Well done to Charity Times for a great event and contribution to acknowledging the sector’s impact.”
