NCVO has released
the full transcript of the Future Services debate held earlier this month
to coincide with the first day of the Labour Party conference.
The alliance, which
promises to put the public's voice into the debate on public services,
is made up of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO),
the National Consumer Council and the Confederation of British Industry.
The debate in London featured contributions from experts across the voluntary,
private and public sectors.
For the government,
John Healy, economic secretary to the Treasury, said that the voluntary
sector should not be content to just deliver public services but must
use its unique position to influence the planning and policy of them as
well.
John Lowe, chief
executive of the RNID, meanwhile, encouraged full use of the charity sector's
skills, saying: "We, in the sector, have a passion that you would
find very difficult to distil and capture in other areas. The voluntary
sector has a significant role in changing and reforming, and not just
delivering public services."
Future Services are holding fringe meetings at all three party conferences
to discuss the ideas further. Copies of the transcript are available from
the NCVO on 020 7520 2468.
