A new set of guidelines has been produced to help charities govern their
organisations effectively.
Published by researchers
from the Foundation of Good Governance, the document includes a list of
tips and advice on the main areas of worry for boards, as well as information
on avoiding error. Charities are also invited to add their own thoughts
to the list, which includes suggestions such as making sure that all board
members and staff have read and understood the constitution, memorandum
and articles, and ensuring there is the right mix of skills and abilities
to support and develop an organisation.
Christine Morrison
of the Foundation said: “Advice about governance can be pretty daunting
for ordinary board members so we have produced something that highlights
the main issues and provides a link to our main report. At the same time
we recognise that people on the front line have the best insights so we
are encouraging them to build on our tips.”
Anybody can use the
material for non-for-profit purposes and further contributions will be
shared at the Participation in Governance Conference on 24 September 2004.
