The Charity Commission has
announced it is to start planning the strategy needed to fulfil its new
public affairs role, as stated in the Charities Bill.
The Bill says that one of the
responsibilities for the commission is to increase public trust and confidence
in charities. In order to do this, the regulator has appointed AS Biss
consultants to help establish how it can fulfil this objective.
Requirements include helping
the commission’s stakeholders to have a better understanding of
what it does, especially in government and policy making, and enabling
the commission to play a more active and influential role in policy development
and public debate on the role and future of charities.
The executive director of policy
and effectiveness, Rosie Chapman, said: “Our approach to public
affairs is shifting gear to meet the challenges and opportunities of the
Charities Bill, as well as match the pace and scope of our own change.
We want to make sure our new Public Affairs function ensures we engage
more effectively with the public and other stakeholders.”
AS Biss is expected
to provide its report later in the autumn. For more information on the
work of the commission visit www.charitycommission.gov.uk
