New Compact Commissioner proposed
30/11/05

The relationship between the voluntary and community sector and public bodies should be overseen by a new Commissioner, it has been proposed.

Outlined at the recent Compact Annual Review meeting, the proposal stated that the Commissioner should be independent of both sectors and act as “watchdog” over all partnership work to ensure the organisations involved adhere to the principles of the Compact and Compact Plus. It will then be given power to adjudicate over any disagreements should they arise.

The proposal was made in response to the Strengthening Partnerships: Next Steps for Compact consultation, which looked at how to further cement the relationship between government and voluntary and community organisations.

Sir Christopher Kelly, chair of the Compact Working Group, said: “A healthy relationship between the voluntary and community sector and the public sector, based on mutual respect, is an essential part of civil society. The Compact Commissioner will help to ensure that the relationship continues to develop along the right lines.”
