MPs support a better deal for third sector 03/05/07

Though a majority of MPs believe charities are vital to their constituencies, many believe local authorities are not treating the sector fairly.

This is according to the new Local Authorities Monitor from think tank nfpSynergy, designed to identify changing local authority attitudes and behaviour towards charities and the broader environment in which they work. The poll of a cross-section of more than 150 MPs found only 54% believing that charities were being treated fairly; a number which fell to 49% among Labour MPs.

This follows on from another recent survey from the think tank, its Charity Parliamentary Monitor of MPs and Peers, which found 82% of MPs believing that: “all charities should be free to influence change, and to campaign, irrespective of their size.” A further 55% believed that the regulatory environment should create a level playing field for charities of all sizes.
