Employees call for support from business in volunteering |

Demand
for employer supported volunteering is overwhelming, according to new research
carried out by Girlguiding UK.
The survey revealed that 93% of the organisation’s
voluntary youth leaders think their employers could improve the running
of Rainbow, Brownie and Guide groups by supporting them in their volunteering.
But just 16% received encouragement from their workplace.
The charity is calling on the business community to show more commitment
to volunteering after more than a third of those questioned said they had
difficulty fitting in their volunteer work around a working week.
The findings follow earlier research from Heart of
the City which showed that corporate volunteering has not increased over
the last year in London.
Liz Smith, head of project 50K at the charity, said businesses were “missing
a trick”. “There are many employees who want to volunteer but
don’t feel they can fit it around their working life. To many employees
[employer supported volunteering] is a valuable perk and, if implemented
well, will not only pay for itself but contribute to the skills and well
being of staff,” she said.
Volunteer Lousie Cope, who is supported by her employer PricewaterhouseCoopers,
said: “Volunteering for Girlguiding UK has given me the opportunity
to experience lots of challenges and learn amazing new skills. I really
do believe that it does make fore a more contented and motivated staff.”
