The Charity Commission has
announced it is to hold its first open board meeting outside London.
Scheduled to take place on
23 May in York, the board meeting will address a range of topics including
the Commission's policy stance on charities providing public services
and how to ensure public trust and confidence in charities.
The board meeting also coincides
with the launch of a series of nine regional presentations by the commission’s
chair Geraldine Peacock and chief executive Andrew Hind, who will be discussing
the regulator’s new three-year strategy with charity leaders from
across the country.
Geraldine Peacock, chairman
of the Charity Commission, said: "We want to engage more effectively
with charities and our visit to York is the very first of a series of
regional visits to explain more about our plans for the future and to
deepen our own knowledge of the sector we regulate. There are almost 12,000
charities in Yorkshire, so this is very important area to us in terms
of the concentration and the diversity of charities in the region.
We hope both events will give
those involved with the voluntary sector a much clearer idea of our role.
We have recently been looking hard at what we do and we are looking forward
to building on the progress of recent years to become a modern and innovative
regulator."
Hosted by York Council
for Voluntary Service (CVS), the strategy meeting takes place on 24 May
but is by invitation only. However, the board meeting is open to all and
those wishing to attend should get in touch by emailing openboardmeeting@charitycommission.gsi.gov.uk
or by calling 0207 674 2385.
