Charities must promote personal benefits of volunteering 01/06/04

Charities Minister Fiona Mactaggart has called on charities to do more to publicise the rewards volunteering offers individuals.

Writing in the June issue of Charity Times magazine to mark Volunteers Week, the Minister urges charities to avoid being too cautious about stressing the benefits volunteering offers to those participating, as well as to wider society. "We don't really emphasise this enough, perhaps too anxious that it will damage the volunteering 'brand'," she writes.

In particular, charities should be bolder in promoting the leadership skills they nurture in volunteers, particularly amongst the young. "Voluntary organisations can train and give hands-on leadership experience to people who may not feel suited to leadership in the business or political fields." she argues. "It is a vital ingredient of a healthy democracy that equips citizens to shape their communities and society at large."
