Hazel Blears, the new Secretary of State for Communities and
Local Government, has announced the 20 local authorities which
will be involved in the Advancing Assets for Communities programme.
The programme follows on from the recent publication of the
Quirk Review, Making Assets Work.
The programme aims to demonstrate how local authorities
and community-led third sector organisations can be supported
to develop joint plans for asset transfer. The local authorities
involved in the programme will receive packages of support
with the aim of advancing up to 40 asset transfer projects
over the next 12 months.
The programme, which ends in March 2008, will be jointly
led by the Development Trusts Association (DTA), Community
Matters, the Local Government Association and Action with
Communities in Rural England.
Jess Steele, head of consultancy at the DTA, said: “We
are delighted to be supporting local authorities and their
community partners to create fair and accountable frameworks
for transfer which will not only show the potential social
and economic benefits of asset transfer but will support
the long-term viability of community anchor organisations.”
