| The
chair of a youth homelessness charity has been appointed chair
of the Audit Commission in a move which demonstrates the importance
of the voluntary sector in public service delivery.
Michael O’Higgins, who has been chair of Centrepoint
for two years and whose career has included government consultancy
and the chairmanship of groups advising the Department of
Health, will begin his three-year term on 1 October. He
will remain the chair of Centrepoint.
The Audit Commission is responsible for ensuring that public
money in England is used properly across local government,
the NHS, housing and the criminal justice system.
Communities and local government secretary Ruth Kelly said:
“Michael will bring a wealth of experience and expertise
to this challenging role and I have every confidence in
his ability to provide the leadership necessary to make
his time as chairman a great success.”
Anthony Lawton, chief executive of Centrepoint, said under
O’Higgins’ chairmanship the charity had expanded
and grown. “I know the Audit Commission with benefit
from his commitment, leadership and resourcefulness,”
he said.
