McCannah of Enfield Council has been elected as the new chair
of the Association of London Government’s grants committee
– the first Conservative chair of the group.
The ALG provides £28 million a year in grants to
more than 400 voluntary sector groups in the capital. McCannah
has served on the grants committee since 2002 and is the
cabinet member for community safety and the voluntary sector
at Enfield Council. He replaces Raj Chandarana.
The appointment follows the election Merrick Cockell, leader
of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, as chair
of the ALG.
“I believe that the ALG is an important organisation
and I will do all I can to strengthen its position, speaking
up for London’s local government with national government,
the Mayor of London and the media,” Cockell said.
Stephen Carr, leader of Bromley Council, was elected as
deputy chair. Steve Bullock, Sean Brennan and Michael Snyder
were named as the ALG’s three vice chairs.
