Efforts to stop Olympic Lottery raid strengthened 24/01/07

A cross-party committee of MPs has provided further substantiation to the NCVO’s continuing efforts to ensure additional lottery cash is not diverted to fund the spiralling cost of the 2012 Olympic Games.

The Culture Media and Sport Select Committee reported on 24 January, saying that good causes should not be unfairly penalised by increasing infrastructure costs for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The MPs also supported the NCVO’s call for the 12% tax on Lottery tickets to be put towards the Olympic shortfall.

NCVO’s director of public policy, Liz Atkins, said that a further diversion of Lottery funds could mean a loss of over £300 million in funding for good causes. “This cross-party report demonstrates the strength of feeling in all parties that other good causes should not lose out as a result of the increased cost of the Olympics,” she said.

The Committee’s report is due to be published at www.parliament.uk/parliamentary_committees/culture__media_and_sport.cfm
but had not yet been so at time of writing.
