DEC breaks world record 20/01/05

The Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC) has broken the world record for the most amount of money raised online in a 24 hour period.

Between 6.16pm on 30 December and 6.16pm on 31 December 2004, 166,936 donations were made to the Tsunami aid appeal, worth a total of £10,676,836. Guinness World Record officials today confirmed was a new world record.

The appeal is already the UK’s most successful fundraising campaign ever, with the DEC predicting that £200m will have been donated since the Tsunami struck on Boxing day. Until now, the record was held by Live Aid, which raised £80m in its first year.

The DEC has already announced it is to wind down its appeal and concentrate on ensuring the money is distributed effectively.
