Online publishing gaining ground 14/02/06

While many voluntary and community organisations are taking advantage of the potential of online publishing, those that aren’t say the cost of initial investment and lack of technological infrastructure are the key barriers, according to the NCVO Publishers Forum.

A survey of the Forum’s members found that 87% of them were publishing electronically to some degree, including reports, newsletters, training and toolkits. The majority said their main reason for doing so was to reach a wider audience.

Emma Moore, NCVO’s head of information and publications, added that additional benefits of online publishing included a broader range of content, the possibility of enhancing existing services and potential savings on print and distribution costs. For those who are not yet taking advantage of electronic publishing, she said: “With a large number of solutions and systems to suit different budgets and needs, an organisation’s approach to online publishing should not be solely driven by technology.”

NCVO Publishers Forum hosted a conference on the viability of online publishing for VCOs on 14 February. The Forum holds regular publishing events -though there are no current plans for another online publishing conference - details of which can be found at www.ncvo-vol.org.uk .
