Charities praised for plain English 01/02/04

Three charities are featured in this year’s list of winners for the Plain English Campaign awards.

To be commended for clear communication are: Age Concern Scotland, for its series of factsheets for elderly people; Colchester & Tendring Women’s Refuge, for a series of publicity and information leaflets; and Dudley Zoological Gardens for its annual review.

The campaign’s founder director, Chrissie Maher, said she was pleased to see documents about social issues achieving success. “These awards show that, while there is still a long way to go, many organisations realise that plain English is the most effective, efficient and socially responsible way to communicate.”

The awards are to be presented on December 6 by journalist and broadcaster Ian Hislop, and include the Golden Bull booby for the year’s most baffling gobbledygook.
