and voluntary sector organisations are being urged to develop their volunteering
initiatives in order to take full advantage of the opportunities that are
arising out of London’s successful Olympic bid.
CSV, one of the UK’s largest volunteering and training
charities, claims that London 2012 could leave the country a legacy of
healthy, active and community spirited people, if existing schemes start
planning now how to adapt to the Olympics build-up and beyond.
Spokesperson for CSV, Jason Tanner, highlighted how it
doesn’t just have to be London-based organisations that can benefit,
giving the example of how volunteers around the country are involved with
projects that bring sport to young people who otherwise wouldn’t
get the opportunity to take part. “And it's important to identify
where projects could link in with the build up to the big event, for example,
there may also be opportunities to create training opportunities in construction
for young people when contracts for building work get underway,”
he added.
Organisations wishing
to find out how they can get involved with the Olympics should visit,
www.volunteer2012.com, where
they can sign up to receive information about the volunteering programme
as soon as it becomes available and make a pledge to provide volunteers
for both the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
