Sector must plug skills gap to remain effective 04/08/04

Skills development should be the top priority of those working in the voluntary sector, according to the Voluntary Sector National Training Organisation (VSNTO). The message forms part of a new strategy published by VSNTO, Improving our skills – a strategy for the voluntary and community sector.

Large skills gaps have been identified, particularly in the fields of management and leadership, and it is recommended that staff, volunteers and trustees work towards improving these areas if organisations are to remain effective.

Head of VSNTO, Janet Fleming, said: "Skills development and good employment practice are key to this sector's continued valuable contribution to society. This strategy reveals the gaps and demonstrates ways in which these can be addressed."

Commissioned by the Active Communities Unit (ACU) and used within ChangeUp, the ACU's framework for the voluntary and community sector's infrastructure, the strategy includes various recommendations, to enhance workforce development and sharing of good practices.
