Getting young people involved in charitable activities is the best way to
earn their support, according to a new survey from Giving Nation (G-Nation).
The survey found that
fundraising activities from “sponsored events to money-spinning
enterprise” are a positive way to harness young people’s support,
and that 76% of the young people voting in the survey on the G-Nation
website, said that they enjoyed taking part.
“It is very
encouraging to see such a high number of young people stating they enjoy
taking part in fundraising and that they are visiting our site to register
their voice”, says Andy Thornton, campaign director for the national
youth initiative. “From this and our G-Week campaign, we can see
that there is a vast reserve of charitable potential in young people.”
To make the most of
this potential, Giving Nation advises charities to forge stronger relationships
with teachers. Recommendations include:
- Developing strong
personal links with teachers
- Consulting teachers
for advice on the best ways to produce teaching materials
- Ensure that all
materials and/or support are relevant and accessible to young people
- Raise awareness
for charity by encouraging schools to take part in G-Week
- Offer talks and
discussion sessions about specific organisations
- Develop a specific
section of websites for young people
