England launches its £1 million rural Volunteer Point project today.
The Home Office funded project aims to help rural communities access
information about local volunteering opportunities by setting up 160 Volunteer
Points – IT-based information kiosks – across the country
by March 2006. The first kiosks are launched in West Kent today and will
be followed by ones in Dorset next week.
“This project is an exciting opportunity to provide a better service
to support volunteering in rural communities where volunteers already
substantially enhance the local quality of life and provide local services,”
said Chris Penberthy, director of capacity building at Volunteering England.
The organisation is
running the programme in partnership with Volunteer Centres, do-it.org.uk
and the local venues where the Volunteer Points are situated.
