WEBSITE TO HELP TACKLE PROBLEMS IN COMPACT AGREEMENTS 06/04/04

The Compact Advocacy Programme is giving voluntary organisations an online toolkit to help them deal with potential breaches of the Compact.

The web based Compact Advocacy DIY tool kit aims to be an essential guide to help voluntary organisations use the Compact in their dealings with government.

The standalone website has been developed to enable voluntary organisations to use the Compact if they think this agreement may have been breached by government at a national or local level.

It provides up-to-date information on complaints procedures and gives a step-by-step guide on who to contact should a problem arise.

Stuart Etherington, chief executive of NCVO, says: "The Compact is an excellent agreement and the Compact Advocacy Programme has proved that it can ensure that there is compliance with it.

"The programme has always hoped that it could give voluntary organisations the confidence they need to use the Compact to ensure that they are treated fairly by the Government. This new online DIY toolkit now gives them the means to do so."

The Compact is a written understanding between the Government and the voluntary sector, setting out a framework for their relationship. It was signed in November 1998 and has cross-party support.

The Compact Advocacy Programme, based at NCVO, was launched in January 2003 with the intention of taking on the government over breaches of the Compact on behalf of aggrieved voluntary organisations.
