SPECIALIST LEGACIES TEAM SET UP TO TACKLE CHARITY CLAIMS 14/04/04

Leading charity lawyers Stone King has announced the creation of a legacy disputes team to cope with the growing demand for mitigation in such cases.

The team comprises both specialist charity lawyers and litigators to provide comprehensive and sensitive advice on all kinds of legacy disputes.

These include claims under The Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependents) Act 1975, negligent Will drafting, the ability to refuse a legacy, legacy mis-descriptions, charitable Will trusts where a Scheme is required, transfer of property to a charity in return for future benefits, and many other issues.

The team will also advise charities on acting as executor/administrator and obtaining trust corporation status to facilitate administering estates and other legacy matters. This can help avoid legal disputes whilst providing charities with control of such estates.

Michael King, head of charity services, says: "Dealing effectively with legacy issues involves a number of skills. Our team's experience provides the balance required between getting the most from legacies left to charity and the impact of defending claims against estates in which a charity is a beneficiary.

“We know how costly disputes can be for charities, diverting energy and resources and carrying the risk of damage to their public imagine. We can work with charities to help minimise those risks".
