SECTOR SUPPORT SCHEME PRAISED AS "GROUNDBREAKING" IN REVIEW 14/04/04

The leading representative group of the Welsh voluntary sector has welcomed an Independent Commission’s review of how it is supported by the National Assembly.

Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA), the umbrella organisation for the country’s 30,000 voluntary groups, says it is pleased that the Commission set up to review the country's Voluntary Sector Scheme has backed the idea.

The Voluntary Sector Scheme was launched three years ago and the Commission examined whether it was having a beneficial impact on voluntary organisations and been successful in helping groups to access funds.

It sets out how the Assembly provides assistance to charities (whether by grants, loans, guarantees or by other means), how the Assembly will monitor the use made of any assistance provided, and how the Assembly consults relevant groups about its plans for the charity sector.

WCVA chief executive Graham Benfield commended the Commission on the speed and thoroughness of its work, saying: "I particularly welcome its overall findings that the scheme is a groundbreaking innovation which remains highly valued by the voluntary sector and the Assembly Government.

"This reflects the views that we hear from voluntary groups across Wales. WCVA also welcomes its conclusion that the Scheme remains fit for purpose and efforts should now concentrate on further progress on implementation."
