GUIDELINES INSIST ON CHARITIES BEING "EFFECTIVE" |

Achieving
effectiveness should be the goal of every charity, not just being well run,
according to new Charity Commission guidance.
"Hallmarks of an Effective Charity" lists six new universal hallmarks
of effectiveness, with clear pointers on achieving them, and is aimed particularly
at trustees of larger charities.
The Commission claims this does not mark a radical break with the past,
but rather an evolutionary shift in its thinking, bringing it more into
line with that of charity trustees.
Rosie Chapman, its director of policy and strategy, says: "As we wait for
the forthcoming Charities Bill, the pressure on charities to demonstrate
effectiveness has never been greater.
We hope this provides them with a useful and practical tool to help keep
pace with the issues facing them today."
Among the themes in the new publication are:
- An effective charity checks regularly that its governing document is up
to date and that its activities and practices are in line with it.
- An effective charity pays attention to the recruitment, selection and
training of trustees, staff and volunteers.
- An effective charity explains its activities and decisions in an open
and transparent way.
"Hallmarks of an Effective Charity" can be found at www.charitycommission.gov.uk
under "Publications".
