Entries are now open
for this year's Charities' Online Accounts Awards, with a prize of £2,000
funding on offer to each of the four income category winners.
Sponsored by CAF (Charities
Aid Foundation) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England
& Wales (ICAEW), the competition is designed to reward best practice
in accounting, raise the standard of web-based annual reports, and encourage
more charities to provide their financial information online.
Neil Jones, CAF's
director of communications and competition judge, says: "Last year's
competition showed the progress that some charities are making in their
online reporting - particularly some of the smaller ones who showed great
imagination and resourcefulness. Any charity that makes its report and
accounts available online should feel encouraged to enter this year."
The 2003 winners from 80 entries were The Woodland Trust,
Life Education Centres, Rett Syndrome Association UK and SNAP. Charities
can enter in one of four income categories: above £2m, between £500,000
and £2m, between £100,000 and £500,000, and under £100,000.
In addition to £2,000, successful entrants will
also receive a pass to attend one of CAF's charity events and a winner's
seal for their website, while runners-up will each receive a certificate
of excellence from
the ICAEW.
All entries will have to pass through three judging stages.
Technical screeners from leading accountancy firms check that every entry
complies with charities accounting practices (SORP). The financial reports
with the highest marks for accuracy will then be assessed on their usability
on the web by a panel of judges specialising in finance, new media and
communications.
Finally, the judges collectively decide on the shortlist
of up to three charities in each category.
