CALL FOR GROUPS TO GET VAT REBATE ON EVENT "ENTRY FEES" 15/04/04

The Charities' Tax Reform Group (CTRG) has called on the government to give back the VAT taken from fundraising events in which charities pay for guaranteed places.

A row has been sparked by news that Customs & Excise plans to use little-known laws to collect VAT from charities which are taking part in the upcoming London Marathon.

Groups traditionally pay to reserve places in the event, which can then be given to their own sponsored runners – but Customs claims this qualifies as paying an "entry fee" subject to VAT. It could cost those charities taking part up to £5m.

The CTRG is demanding that the government should reimburse this money, and cites precedents for this in regard to the famous Candle In The Wind CD for Princess Diana, and Bob Geldof's Band Aid.

Chairman Nick Kavanagh says: "CTRG urges Treasury ministers to demonstrate their support for this massive charitable endeavour by donating to the charities affected an equivalent of the VAT they have to pay."
