DSC awards announced 18/12/08

A charity working with the local community in Malawi to improve health, education and sanitation, has been awarded an Everyday Impact Award by the Directory of Social Change (DSC).

Malawi Dream founder Sonia Waters says the charity's vision is to provide financial means and practical guidance to enable the villagers on Likoma Island to help themselves.

"A huge undertaking was installing a water tank and running water for Mbungo and Nkwazi villages. Residents can now grow vegetables, make bricks and no longer need to go to the lake for water for cooking and washing."

The award was one of four offered by DSC at their annual Social Change Awards.

Help the Aged won the Influencer Award for their campaign on ageism which led the government to ban age discrimination in all areas of life, not just the workplace.

Neighbourhood Renewal Team won the Public Body Award for their work in the development and revitalisation of a community in Stoke-on-Trent.

St Nicholas Hospice won the Investing in Social Change Award for their innovative scheme providing work experience opportunities for disadvantaged members of their community.
